To The Locals: This is our year to re-embrace the Derby. You may think you’ve been there, done that — you’ve seen everything under the sun. You’ve thrown up in the Infield. Hooked up behind a dumpster. Woken up with licked-on tattoos. Stayed up for 48 hours and cracked a beer at the crack of dawn. Big deal.
It is a big deal … for all these peeps streaming into town. But it’s also our big deal. Let’s loosen up our skinny jeans and drink in the spirit that dazes this city every year. It’s Derby, dammit! And that’s the only excuse you need.
To The Transplants: We have diligently compiled this list of established watering holes in Louisville (and a bit beyond) for you. There are approximately 322 nightclubs, dives, brew pubs, jock joints, hipster hideouts, lesbian lairs, biker bars, queer quarters and dude dwellings listed here by area of town. And within each, we’ve provided the cost of a domestic bottle of beer and which bartender will give you the best service. Why? So you don’t come off as a pretentious tourist who refers to Kentucky as a fly-over state except for the first Saturday in May, when you’re falling down the stairs of Molly Malone’s, drunk off your ass on cheap bourbon and high-fiving us, swearing you’re going to buy a house in the neighborhood as soon as the economy recovers. Oh, and the price of the bottle should tell you what kind of tail you’re talking to.
Wanna know how to make nice with the locals? Buy us beer. And bourbon. We won’t turn down either. Just don’t expect anything other than a nod of approval. We will gladly step aside and let you rule the roost — just remember to tip our bartenders.
