Rumblings From the World of Sports

Goin’ back to Cali.
As I mentioned a month ago, look for Bryan Harvey to wind up at Long Beach State. Why is it that this, the latest of a multitude of evacuations from U of L, bothers me so? Is The Rick recruiting the wrong kids? Is he giving up too soon and running them off? Call it the Roderick Rhodes Syndrome.

One more time —
riddle me this.

I still await the answer to this question: Why on earth would it make any difference to U of L where the downtown arena is located? As long as there are enough seats to sell seat licenses, enough boxes to shill to corporata, a big enough scoreboard for commercials and enough room for all the T-shirts tosses, why isn’t the water company site as good — or better — than the LG&E site? What is the true story behind U of L’s push for the more expensive site that will take a lot longer to build. Whose zoomin’ whom here?

Oops, wrong number.
Certainly don’t know if this is true, but it’s a great story. As it goes, one of the Jones-Schnatter study guys calls Schnatter on the phone a few days before the results are made public. It is said he talks about how the study will muck up the process, etc, etc. Then he realizes he’s called the wrong guy, that it’s not Schnatter on the line but another local businessman, who immediately calls the LG&E faction with the news. Boil, boil, toil and trouble in River City.

Last NIT story from
yesteryear.
In the early ’50 s, U of L’s hoops program was on the uptick, but Peck Hickman couldn’t get the team invited to the NIT. So the ever-wily coach invited NIT major domo Ned Irish to speak at the Cardinal banquet after the 1950-51 season. The Cards were invited the next five years in a row.
Future supercoach.
How come I’m not hearing the name of UAB’s Mike Anderson for the jobs opening up?

Skewed stats.
Okie State is counting son Sean’s wins on the record of papa Eddie. Whatsupwitdat?
