2011 Readers' Choice

Cheers to the winners

We here at LEO Weekly have a reputation for being a cynical lot. After all, it’s our job as journalists to bring you the truth, and more often than not, the truth hurts. But it’s not all doom and gloom and scandal — there’s much to love about Louisville. And so once a year, as is tradition, we suspend our surly commentary and toast the city through our annual Readers’ Choice Issue.

This year, our readers cast more than a quarter-million votes, choosing their favorites in a long list of categories. We are grateful for your votes, even when we disagree, and we present the people, places and things you deem the best of the best in the pages that follow.

But not so fast — as much as we value democracy, did you really think we could refrain from having a say? Ha! To that end, we bring you a slightly more eccentric list that ranges from “Best Duck Fat Popcorn” to “Best Use of Baby Oil in Louisville.”

Now raise a glass — water, wine or anything in-between will do — and join us in toasting the winners.

there is no way Kashmir is best indian in louisville

By tim09
I agree most of these winners are real winners but there is no way Kashmir is best in Indian Restaurant. If you have tried other indian restaurants you would agree with me. Leo weekly should not allow users to vote multiple times by closing the browser. They should make you register to vote so people can't vote for themselves multiple times.

Revelry? Really?

By yourekiddingme_right
Agreed! Stuffing the ballot box taints the entire process. That's the only way Revelry Gallery could possilby have come up as the winner in both the best art gallery AND boutique categories! It's mediocre at best in both, not that THAT means anything anymore, because it's all about getting media attention and making the public believe you're the best, whether its through putting fake rave customer comments on Yelp!, pressing your other media friends to write you up in the paper, or enlisting your "friends" to vote early and often for LEO Readers Choice. LEO really ought to use a more reliable system so that it doesn't end up with, as in this case, a totally worthless beauty contest.

Revelry? Really?

By kellyfromdaville
Stuffing the ballot box? How do you do that? Oh-oh, sounds like we have a sore loser here. Too bad you don't have enough people who like or care about your gallery or boutique enough to vote for you. Too bad. Personally, I really like Revelry as an art gallery and boutique and I voted for them. I stop in all the time beause they are are constantly putting up interesting and unusual art and objects. It is anything but "mediocre". But then again, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Obviously, a lot of other LEO readers agree with me. Congrats to Revelry---you earned it.

By yourekiddingme_right
dear kelly, this is how you stuff a ballot box -- encourage all your friends to vote EVERY DAY - and Revelry's FB page shows the gals there were busy little bees during the month of August doing just that: "Another beautiful Kentucky day, another beautiful opportunity to vote for your favorite art gallery!" with one fan saying: "I've voted for you 3 days in a row now." Or this from August 6 "oooohh- PLEASE help us achieve an important goal and VOTE for Louisville's best art gallery!!! DO IT NOW! (and every day...)". I'm happy for you if you found a gallery that shows art that you really like (although cartoons, comic books, decorated suckers, knitted hats, and feathered earrings are not exactly most people's idea of great or even good art), but LEO should limit each reader to one vote only in each category so that the results are at least somewhat meaningful.

The guys from United plumbing should be on the first place in the Best contractor top. They do a very good job in a very short time. The only guys who do better jobs are the ones on The people who voted for this top may not have been in need of many plumbers, because if they have had, it's a sure thing that the top would have been different.

By vicd84
The top that's particularly interesting is the one with the spas. These places, although very appreciated, are a long way from becoming really professional spa salons. For instance, there is this salon in Portland which offers services of the highest quality and it's been the first in all top for the past few years. Until these salons won't embrace the new techniques and won't hire the best people, they won't be anywhere near the one in Portland.

It is of great pleasure to see communities honoring their members who distinguished themselves one way or the other. Another pleasing fact is the recognition dental care professionals get for their activity in the community. There numerous others professionals that are active in different communities and strive to implement new techniques, technologies and ideas in their work. The ones interested can learn more here in no time. Working in dental care often requires keeping up to date with the latest developments in the field.

My wife and I are starting a "book club" for the two of us, an idea that we got after reading about study skills tutoring. The plan is to read an award winning book each month. The first month we'll read a book that won an award in 2012, the second month an award-winner from 2011 and so on. There are many, many book awards to pick from. Any suggestions?

These are the kind of articles important for all people: where it's expressed what the consumers of these products or services feel about them. Health services web-sites that are the top in their field, like, can be found by reading several forums, but for the others is harder to know what is the best. The reader's choice is here just to do that.

I do not own a business, and I love LEO Weekly. I am always excited for these awards! When I saw the comments at the bottom of the awards today, this comment was really upsetting... I voted one time for Revelry in Gift and Gallery, as well as numerous others in other categories. Who did you vote for yourkiddingme_right? This is a readers choice award, and readers have the choice to vote in any way they want, as many times as they can, and for whomever they want to win. If your not happy with the results... then campaign for your shoddy business a little harder next year, however, I bet you'll still be back here complaining about more winners when you lose again due to lack of support. Even worse... you probably don't own a business, your probably here to just complain, which makes you even lamer! So... sit on your computer, type a feeble response to this, and enjoy being awful. Isn't it great when you can just type something without having to say it to someone's face! BTW, cool screen name. All the winners will enjoy their day despite you and your worthless opinion. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL WINNERS, AND CONGRATS TO ALL OF THOSE WHO RECEIVED VOTES! YOU ALL DESERVE IT!

i don't own an art gallery

By yourekiddingme_right
i don't own an art gallery but have studied art and have visited enough art galleries to know that this one just doesn't qualify unless, of course, your idea of art is a cute little knitted sock monkey hat, comic books, or feathered earrings. BTW, love your screen name too, but YOUR screen name and YOUR writing demonstrates that you completely fail to understand how to use the words "you're" and "your" in conversation or the written word. How embarrassing for you! when you go back to school to learn about art (which we all hope you will do soon), do us all a favor and take a grammar class and brush up on YOUR use of the possessive "YOUR" versus the contraction "YOU'RE" so that you can stop embarrassing yourself when you post future comments.

By kellyfromdaville
If you are giving grammer lessons then learn that a sentence begins with a capital letter. While you are at it, learn about can be anything from a comic graphic to a Picasso. I like the eclectic mix of art I find at Revelry. BTW, even the Speed has a gift shop with some funky items, do they meet your your definition of an art museum? Who are you to tell other people what art is? After learning how they hustled to get votes, I admire the Revelry even more. It's also obvious you are a bully, art snob and a disgruntled owner or worker at a gallery that didn't win....and that makes you a loser on all levels. This is my last post on the matter. If you argue with a fool....who is the bigger fool? I've wasted enough energy on you. Try getting more votes for yourself next year....if you can.

Agrees with "Revelry? Really?"

By GetOutTheVote
Like the the one who posted "Revelry Really?" I too think the voting seems a bit suspect, especially when you see their facebook postings showing that they as you say, "hustled" votes. Whether you like the shop or not, that just smells bad.

I judge you when you use poor grammar

By sr. mary paschal
Looks like somebody could use some spelling lessons too. It's grammar, not "grammer" unless you're talking about Kelsey Grammer, but nobody talks about him anymore! By the way, "Kelly", are you somebody's father??!!!

yourkiddingme_right is Lame

By yourkiddingme_r...
Your Lame. Your'e Lame. Nice feeble response, and I bet your still just steaming away in your computer chair thinking about what nasty thing you can type next. How about you go to Revelry and personally tell the owners how you feel, or maybe even start a protest? You'll probably never show your face outside of your computer hole. I will personally be visiting Revelry to see what is new, I have been once before, but unfortunately I haven't studied art so I couldn't tell if it was a good Gallery or Gift shop... Maybe you and I can meet, and you can educate me with all the art you studied, then we can visit Revelry and the gallery you think should have one, or is it won... How awful of a person are you? What other winners do you want to attack? How about "Best Charitable Event"? I bet you are just sooooo (I think I spelled soooo wrong, can you help me out art scholar?) mad that Cabo Wabo won. Your probably absolutely fired up that Ali won "Best Local Celebrity"... It should have been you, right? Go jump in a lake, which we all hope you do.

Save the TeePee

By Lark
Having campaigned for saving the "teepee" for over a year and a half, I cannot even express how happy I am that the Hogan's Fountain Pavilion was voted as the Best Local Landmark! So many people in this community have loved the teepee for nearly 50 years and now it is finally getting the recognition it deserves as a historical landmark. City officials are coming to realize that it should not be demolished. Besides being a sentimental favorite, the most economical and environmentally friendly solution is to restore this beloved structure and maintain it for future generations. We are getting very close to our goal and thank LEO and its readers for helping us. If you want to keep up with our progress, please visit our Facebook page and "Like" it. Thanks and a suggestion

By JCSullivan
As the Director of Holy Spirit Child Care, I would like to thank the LEO readers for voting us the best daycare. It is truly an unexpected honor. I would like to suggest to the LEO staff that next year the category be named "Best Child Care" rather than "Best Daycare" as child care professionals teach children not days. Again, thank you to LEO and LEO readers.

Blind Pig smells like the fryer at one of the bowling alley's listed when you walk in. It won best Bloody Mary. Did it also win best barbershop or adult store? Get Real Leo the number of votes it got for Bloody Mary is probably 1000 times the number consumed there--ever--. Post the counts online so we can see just how rigged this was.....wonder if the owner is friends with the past owner of the LEO...or folks there???Why don't you investigate that like you did Jerry giving Louisville's money for the Sports & social club?? Re-inact exactly how that went down like you did the remodel at S&S???

I stand corrected. Thank you. Now here's a lesson for you: spelling and grammar are two separate subjects. I'm lousy at spelling but a demon on grammar---even if i can't spell it correctly. BTW, I wasn't the one who made the mistake, I just commented on it so your "too" was unnecessary.

Revelry, Blind Pig, Leo Awards

By yourkiddingme_r...
I would like to know how many businesses did campaign for votes? To me, this seems like a good idea if you want your business to win... Anyone remember how voting works for any selection process? Did the 8th grade class president just sit back and think to himself... "They'll all vote for me, I just know it!" A good campaign brings good results. AGAIN, CONGRATS TO THE WINNERS! BTW, I am starting to feel way too much negativity associated with these posts and these awards, aren't their any good people left out there besides myself and yourkiddingme_right???

i agree...

By bettyford
to an extent anyways....the kid in 8th grade was just running for president right?? not hall monitor, custodian assitant, teacher's pet, vice principal etc.????

And how on earth did the kid

By sr. mary paschal
And how on earth did the kid running for president end up with 60 votes when there were only 30 students in the class??!!!

kellyfromdaville -- You get a D minus for the sentence "BTW, even the Speed has a gift shop with some funky items, do they meet your your definition of an art museum?" Very poor use of grammar and punctuation, especially for someone who is a "demon" on grammar. And with regard to your comment, "This is my last post on the matter. If you argue with a fool....who is the bigger fool?" --- well, I guess we have seen who really is the bigger fool. Have a nice day!

there is no need to fight!

By tim09
There is no need to flight plp. All I am saying is, I am sure some people won because they really deserved it but there are some plp who probably sat on the computer for 8 hours and voted again and again for their own business. Do you know, even though Leo said you can vote once daily, you could just close your browser and open it again and it will let you vote again?? My point was, Leo should restrict voting to only once a day so plp wouldn't vote multiple times in one day for their own business. The best way to judge the real winners is to look at their ratings on google, yahoo, urbanspoon etc. The reason I was concerned about kashmir is because they have low rating on urbanspoon and a lot of bad reviews on google while other restaurants have way better ratings and reviews and they didn't win. This is why this is suspicious.

The grounds I was worried about Kashmir is for the reason that they have near to the ground rating on urban spoon and a group of bad reviews on Google at the same time as other restaurant have way better ratings and appraisal and they didn't come first. april fool status || facebook jokes
