Collecting Kentucky Music:
The Alan Lomax Recordings, 1933-1942

Once upon a time (between 1933 and 1942), folklorist and song collector for the Library of Congress, Alan Lomax, ventured into the exotic world of Kentucky to “document the vernacular music of farmers, laborers, coal miners, preachers, housewives.” In 2015, the Alan Lomax Archive launched “The Lomax Kentucky Recordings,” an online portal that presents the entire collection for “exploration, study, and enjoyment of all Kentuckians.” To discuss these recordings and play a few pieces, The Filson Historical Society has invited Nathan Salsburg, Lomax Archive curator and Grammy-nominated producer.
