THIS WEEK’S TWIN PEEKS:AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH2006; DVD $29.95, PGWho knew Al Gore could be so funny and passionate? Here, with the help of director Davis Guggenheim, he presents the scientific realities of Global Warming free from politics, spin and ignorance. Bottom line: If we don’t give a damn today, there won’t be a tomorrow — and tomorrow is already here! Charming, funny, engaging, surprising and compelling; it’s amazing just how intelligent and captivating the world can be when stripped of politics. A breakthrough piece of entertainment that might just save the damned planet!ELVIS PRESLEY: ED SULLIVAN SHOWS2006; DVD $29.95, URAnd you want excitement? Check out this time capsule from 50 years ago when Elvis Presley exploded into America’s living rooms — and nothing would ever be the same again. Before cell phones, downloads and 500-channel cable, 60 million people could gather together as one big family and share the now-forgotten experience of live TV on a Sunday night. And on three of those nights we saw The King of Rock ’n’ Roll perform at the peak of his career, and TicketMaster didn’t make a goddamn dime. This is why God gave us DVD.A WIND NAMED AMNESIA2006; DVD $9.95, URA wonderful anime fantasy about a celestial zephyr that leaves the Earth without speech, identity, tools or memories of any kind. Two years later a young hero who has re-educated himself begins a spiritual journey.ANOTHER GAY MOVIE2006; DVD $24.95, URA savagely gritty, painfully funny spoof of the “teens make a pact to lose their virginity” genre — from a gay perspective! The “romancing the quiche” parody of “American Pie,” alone, is priceless.BACKLASH2005; DVD $24.95, RReal nice tropical-paradise actioner about a sexy CIA agent (Danielle Burgio) trying to escape from hired assassins during Carnivale on the colorful isle of Trinidad.BLOOD OF THE VAMPIRE/THE HELLFIRE CLUB2006; DVD $14.95, URA pair of Limey Hammer-esque howlers from the late ’50s. “Blood” has no vampire, but it does have Donald Wolfit as the wonderfully over-the-top warden of a castle/prison/medical-hell, plus lovely Barbara Shelley. “Hellfire” is a campy swashbuckler involving purloined inheritances, Peter Cushing, circus freaks and naughty PG-rated orgies — sort of “Robin Hood” a la Roger Corman. Both were penned by the author of Hammer’s “Curse of Frankenstein.”DARK HARVEST 3: SCARECROW2005; DVD $26.95, RAka “Skarecrow,” this week’s cheezy low-budget sub-SciFi Channeler about a 60-year-old curse being revisited on the grandson of a thief and murder. Third in the series after “The Maize: The Movie,” and they ain’t gettin’ any smarter. Man, we love crap like this!DARK SHADOWS: BLOOPERS AND TREASURES2006; DVD $19.95, URLots of fun; a tasty aperitif while we wait for the producers to cook up a 1,200-plus episode complete-series release. From Dan Curtis’ fabulous Gothic horror soap opera of 1966-71: a cache of rare and unusual material, most of it only seen at fan conventions. And since the show was broadcast LIVE, there are enough bloopers here to last for centuries! The “Treasures” include a long-overdue collection of “Dark Shadows” music, historical background on real witch trials that were mentioned in the show and much more.GRAND THEFT AUTO: TRICKED OUT EDITION1977; DVD $19.95, PGA lost Roger Corman stinker from the late ’70s. Ron “Opie” Howard and Nancy Morgan steal her daddy’s Rolls Royce and elope to Vegas with daddy, a PI, Marion Ross and every cop, trouper and reward-seeker for 1,000 miles on their tale. The high-speed bang-up ending has never been topped, with a reported $300,000 worth of Detroit’s finest giving up the ghost in spectacular non-CGI fashion. Enjoy.ICE AGE: THE MELTDOWN2006; DVD $29.95, PGRay Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, Seann William Scott, etc., return for more CGI animated antics in this for-the-wee-ones tale of love and slush among the Mastodons. If you liked the first one ...SCOOP2006; DVD $29.95, PG-13Scarlett Johansson and Hugh Jackman ... Do we really need to go on? OK, mumble mumble mumble, something about a goofy tale of mystery and murder. All you really want to know is that Scarlett (who we loved in “Eight Legged Freaks,” although she never mentions it on her resume) gets a little lip-action with Hugh and you get to watch. Written and directed by Woody Allen.STAR TREK: THE ANIMATED SERIES1973; DVD $54.95, URNearly forgotten, even by most Trekkies, this short-lived animated series suffered from the usual studio interference, but still managed to turn out some good adventures. Our favorite were those written by D.C. Fontana like the “sequel” to “City on the Edge of Forever,” based on the works of Harlan Ellison. Four-discs, 22 episodes, tons of freebies; worth checking out.THE BRIDGE GAME2006; DVD $29.95, URTalky tale of four women who meet weekly on a bridge where a friend had committed suicide to discuss life and their problems with it. It’s a metaphor for the way people make light of serious conversations so as not to upset other members of the group, but in doing so cause emotional pressures that can erupt in catastrophic ways. In other words: A Chick-Flick.THE CRY BABY KILLER1958; DVD $19.95, URJack Nicholson’s screen debut! He plays a strong but lonely teen, beaten by punks who want to move in on his girl. He challenges the thug leader to a fight, someone drops a pistol and a series of bad breaks finds Jack holding hostages against a police stand-off. One of the best JD movies of all time, now available on DVD.YOU, ME AND DUPREE2006; DVD $29.95, PG-13Newlyweds Kate Hudson and Matt Dillon, well-established and professional, find themselves with their overgrown slacker man-child buddy, Owen Wilson, as a houseguest who proceeds to make their new life a living hell. A perfect date-flick; we’ll watch anything with cutey Katy in it.OTHER DVDS OF INTERESTBOXER’S OMEN1983; DVD $19.95, URDA ALI G SHOW: DA COMPLEET SEEREEZ2006; DVD $49.95, URHOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS DELUXE EDITION1966; DVD $19.95, URPRESTON STURGES: THE FILMMAKER COLLECTION1942; DVD $59.95, URSEINFELD: SEASON 71990; DVD $49.95, URTHE 9/11 COMMISSION REPORT2004; DVD $24.95, URA more complete listing and free vids at www.videotapeworm.com!
