The duo of Angryblue (aka artist Justin Kamerer) and William Ragland sees the pair exploring dark, ethereal sonic landscapes in what would seem to be a series of improvised sessions. The elasticity inherent to ambient/drone music is remarkably comparable to jazz in that its boundaries are hedged only by its authors’ limitations. As such, the Hope and Hope 2 EPs offer equally malleable meditations that often seem to emanate from grim places. They shift between tracks like “Sine,” a primarily drone-oriented sound collage, and “Divine Revenge,” which features what could be either guitar volume swells or a keyboard and culminates with a muted piano. Perhaps most interesting is the decision to leave everything as is, with what would seem to be little to no editing, which makes for a provocative snapshot of their compositional process.
