Welcome Oblivion
If you didn’t know any better, you’d think Welcome Oblivion was a brand new Nine Inch Nails record. Well, you’d think that, but probably wonder why Trent Reznor sounds like a lady — one with a beautiful voice — when he sings, but still ... of course, you would be mostly right to think this. Comprised of Reznor, his wife Mariqueen Maandig (who provides the majority of the aforementioned and quite lovely singing) and longtime collaborators Rob Sheridan and Atticus Ross, How To Destroy Angels is unmistakably relative to Nine Inch Nails. Industrial sounds? Check. Weird production techniques? Again, check. The primary difference here is Maandig’s wonderful singing, which goes a long way toward transforming this project beyond its constituent parts. The Books-like song “Ice Age” offsets the electronic grit of “Strings and Attractors,” making for a balanced and surprisingly danceable affair.
