It’s a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma (thank you, Winston Churchill): How could a person who has an aversion to fire be a glassblower?

Perhaps the answer lies with Tiffany Ackerman, 29. As an art major with an interest in painting, she decided to take a glassblowing class in 2004 before she graduated from U of L. Well, a glass class, anyway.

“I thought I was doing stained glass,” she says, laughing. “I said, ‘Are you serious?’ when I realized it was glassblowing. I’m terrified of fire.”

Fast-forward to today. Ackerman is one of the resident artists at Flame Run Glass Studio and Gallery. “I thought I was a ’fraidy cat, but it turns out I’m an adrenaline junkie. The studio doesn’t scare me.”

Her “Aquarium Series” came about because of her “serious affection for all things aquatic. Glass freezes time; it’s like a frozen aquarium.”
