Heeding granny’s advice. Grandma Tillie used to say, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.” Thus, I refrain this week from commenting on U of L’s second home loss in a row and the state of Cards football. OK, except this.
Encore??? Former coach John L. Smith was in the crowd. One wag wondered whether U of L’s ex should be inserted at halftime as a “relief coach?”
Movin’ on. There are changes afoot in prep sports around the commonwealth. A source advises that the new rules might cause our burg’s dean of high school coaches, Male High’s Bob Redman, to move on.
The real deal. Hoops practice starts Friday. Can I get a witness?
$$$ doesn’t talk, it swears. Despite a $40 million-plus athletics budget, U of L’s rowers and swimmers were selling raffle tickets Friday to tailgaters to raise money.
Footy time. The Aussie Rules Football Nationals arrive in town this weekend. Thousands of players competing for the USA championship. Games are all day Saturday and Sunday at Champions Park (the soccer fields) on Upper River Road. A squad from Down Under, the Australian Convicts, will also play a match. If you go — and you should — remember that the guys in the white coats aren’t coming to take you away. They be the umpires.
SchnellSpeak of the week. Before FAU’s narrow loss to South Florida, Empire Builder Schnell referred to the Bulls as the Fighting Owls’ big brother. “They taught me all the things that they thought were important and all the things that they would do differently if they had a chance. It was a great help to me to walk through the minefields of failure to get through to success.” Asked whether Florida can support seven schools in the NCAA’s highest division, Theoretical Schnell intoned, “It is inevitable. The cosmic forces are all moving in that direction.” After Saturday’s loss, Schnell the Optimist saw a building block: “We will get a great deal of benefit if we are as dejected as I think my football team is and my coaches are because we didn’t take advantage of the opportunity.”
